ONE IN 10 EUROPEANS ARE UNEMPLOYED




Almost one in ten Europeans were unemployed in December, as announced today by the European statistical office, showing that the unemployment rate remains at its highest level in 12 years. In the euro zone unemployment reached 10%, while overall EU-27 was at 9.6%, said Eurostat.

service, which is based in Luxembourg, recorded a slight decline of the real number of unemployed. The unemployed fell by 19,000 in the EU overall and 73,000 in the euro area compared with November. Overall, according to data of Eurostat, 15,775 million people were unemployed in the Eurozone in December while in the European Union as a whole the number amounted to 23.179 million.
Among the 21 countries for which data were available monthly data, the unemployment rate dropped to only four. including Belgium, where imminent political crisis, Ireland and Spain. 
Unemployment among young people but remained alarmingly high at 21%, which remained unchanged from November. In the eurozone declined by 20.5% to 20.4%. 
The highest rates of youth unemployment were recorded in Spain (42.8%, with overall unemployment at 20.2%) and Slovakia (37.3%) while in Germany, which is characterized as the strongest European economy, this ratio was only 8.6%. Overall unemployment in Germany stood at 6.6%. In France, the overall unemployment rate was at 9.7%. The lowest overall rates of unemployment were recorded in the Netherlands (4.3%), Luxembourg (4.9%) and Austria (5%).
